What is Hospice Care?
Hospice care is for any person who has terminal illness or when curative treatment is no longer effective. Hospice care focuses on caring for the person’s comfort, not curing the illness. Hospice care is provided by a team that sees to the medical, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient. Hospice also helps family members manage the practical responsibilities and emotional challenges of providing care for their loved one.

How does Hospice Care start?
When a physician makes a prognosis that a patient is in the last stages of illness (six months or less to live), they may place an order for hospice care. At this point a hospice provider can be contacted to start the hospice admission process.

What is the difference between Hospice and Palliative Care?
In it’s simplest terms, hospice care is for patients that are in the last stages of illness, (within six months) while palliative care is for those with life-limiting or chronic conditions. The care philosophy of ensuring comfort is still at the core of both, but with palliative care it is delivered alongside curative treatments.

Where is Hospice provided?
Hospice services can be provided to any number of locations within the hospice office’s service areas, including memory care communities, skilled nursing facilities, boarding care, or the patient’s home. Comfort and tranquility are the goals, great effort is taken to keep surroundings comfortable, peaceful and familiar.

How is Hospice funded?
Hospices receive funds from government programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and/or private insurers. Patient with a terminal illness do not usually have to pay for hospice care. Most hospice patients have their costs covered by Medicare, through the Medicare Hospice Benefit. Most medication and therapies, which relieves pain and provide comfort, are covered through hospice care.
